My 6 year old son loves playing football, how can I help him improve properly?

What do you think are the most important things for kids to practice from 6 - 12 to help them become proper footballers?

The reason I ask is I´ve got a 6 year old son who loves football, when he comes home from training he demands to keep playing in the garden at home or in the local public football pitch!

So how can I help him to improve properly?

Interesting story. In terms of how many kids actually go on to play as pros maybe his cautious choice was a wise one? Perhaps he had dodgy knees or something

Just be happy that your son loves playing, and keep wanting to play. The more he plays around the more he learns.
At his age its most important to gain ball control and just keep playing without to much coaching.
Coerver ball Mastery drills can be helpful.

Actually River hawks did want me, but I wanted to stay with my mates at Cowley.

Hey Ornchurch,
No I played for Cowley Boys Club in Forest Gate.
Peanuts, Schaefer and Tibbs all played for Riverhawks though. They always beat us.
Terry O’Neil, Danny Young and a few others from River hawks played for Newham though.
They were good!

I was born in 1966at u14, so we are talking 1979/80..... Look up London Borough of Newham football. I’m sure there is something out there about what we did.

We beat Dagenham 4-0 at the Ford ground in Dagenham in one final and we beat Barking 3-1 in the other final at Terence McMillan.

Barking went 1-0 up was actually a good team.

Nothing imaginary about what I wrote. They play u6 on small pitches out here in the states. They play games here. Just as well they don’t where you are, it would get embarrassing for the poor kids.

1. If you knew anything about kids football you’d know they don’t play competitive matches at development level. Clearly you have no clue.

As I said Fornals has the legs and lungs and has an uncanny knack of getting into scoring positions, but he is not a natural football player. His touch and ball distribution has improved under Moyes but he still has a way to go.

FYI. I was on the book as a schoolboy u15 and U16 for Spurs and I played for Leytonstone and Ilford and Cheshunt. The manager John Ward left Leytonstone and Ilford and took me with him to Cheshunt. I was spotted playing for Newham u14. I played with Jimmy Tibbs jr, Graeme Rouse (Peanuts) GK and Danny Schaefer, some on here might know them. We won the crisp and finch shield(London and Essex cup) we went 14-0 never lost a game.
Which is why we were scouted. We played at Terence McMillan stadium for our home games.

The scout from Spurs his name was Mel Gibson brother of Terry Gibson, he would some times get a ride with us in Mels car. Keith Burkinshaw was the manager and we played our games at Cheshunt Spurs training ground,So I’ve been properly coached. I started playing u9.

I have 2 sons both played football as young boys, for AYSO. Coaches there have to be licensed every both coaches my boys had coached them on having fun and the excitement of scoring goals. So yes, they were taught to shoot at a young age, younger than 8.

It is obviously coaches choice on how they teach kids and what they prioritize which is why some teams are better than others.

If I have a shit I’d ask how well your team is doing, my guess is they get beat all the time because you end up with a zero at the end of each game, No doubt you’ll tell us all that your are Bill Shankly and your u6 team is Liverpool.

saying someone needs coaching does not mean they "arent a natural footballer".
anyone semi-pro and above is 100% blessed with a natural ability, if you ever played with someone who's been paid to play you'd see that.
a semi-pro footballer will easily be the best footballer you've ever played with.

so to say a Spanish U21 player whos played in La Liga for one of the best teams "isn't a natural footballer" is just plain retarded.

all the drills you put up i reckon less than 1% is anything close to shooting so that should tell you everything.
so yeh - not even in the top 20 things we do.

Makes sure you do everything you can to ensure he loves playing and enjoys it very much. After that encourage and kick a ball back and forth with him yourself. Have him use right foot and left foot for short passes back and forth with yourself.

It’s fun. That’s what drew us all to football.

Every player needs coaching, some more than others, please don’t tell me you think Fornals will be as good a ball player as Trevor Brooking. If Fornals spent every day for the rest of his life racticing dribbling and passing he still wouldn't come anywhere near as good as Brooking. As for his finishing, Nothing needs to be said there, we all know how horrible he is. Suffice to say Fornals has room for improvement, more so than others.

Get him to continually kick a ball with BOTH feet against a wall. Do that until he is 8. Then look for a local team. In between doing that, take him fishing, and build lego with him and read to him. That'll do the job

6 year olds do not have the power or motor skills to learn to "shoot at the bottom corner" thats why nobody does it at age.
